The outspoken box art for the Night Shift Nurses DVD makes the claim that you are about to bear witness to "The most shocking erotic anime ever." Making a claim such as this says one of two things about you. Either you're really confident in your product or you're simply trying to trick the consumer into a purchase. I'll be honest, in that I don't know if it's the MOST shocking anime I've ever seen, however, there is enough in here to certainly cause a few heads to make a most unexpected spin. Take it for what it's worth, it may not be the most shocking anime, but it could very well be the most mean-spirited anime, and I suppose that says something. Doesn't it?

I'm going to spare you the details of names here, besides I'm thinking that it may be in my best interest to protect the innocent. In any event, this disc is split up into 3 episodes that each run about 20-25 minutes a piece. The setup is basic (perhaps a bit too basic) in that a new doctor has arrived at the hospital. It's not exctly clear, but this doctor has some sort of past that deals with rape, torture, sexual abuse...you name it. Moving along, it turns out that the head of operations at the hospital (a sexalicious young lady, as are all of the young nurses) is connected to the good doctors past in some way. If you think I'm being vague, it's not because I don't want to give anything away, it's because there is virtually no setup and the viewer is literally forced to fend for themselves right from the start. This is no way to treat a guest, is it?

Moving along, the head of operations wants the doctor to secretly turn the staff nurses into obedient sex slaves. This in turn will cause business to literally boom (or so she thinks). I mean, who wouldn't want to check into this hospital? What follows are a series of extremely filthy setups, as the doctor takes advantage of the nurses one by one, turning them into the sex slaves that he (and the head of operations) so desires.

So why is this anime so mean spirited? Well, the elimination of any supernatural forces, give the whole affair too much of a human quality, the rapes and torture sessions are really gratuitous. I mean, I really don't mind a demon beast with 5 tentacle-cocks raping a young schoolgirl, but when the human element is all that we have, and the doctor is literally torturing his victims in a gynecology chair, well - we may have crossed a line somewhere here. Add to this the fact that many of the young girls he victimizes are virgins (see where this is leading?) so needless to say, things do get a bit messy. OK, so maybe this is a pretty shocking anime after all, but not all that enjoyable.

Audio and video quality is on par with the usual releases from Central Park Media. Picture quality is quite clear with sharp and vibrant colors. The full frame presentation is definitely above average. Audio is presented in surround in either English or Japanese with optional English subtitles. I usually don't mind the English dub track, but in this instance most of the participants come across as being either drunk or retarded. If you don't mind the reading, stick with the subs.

Extras are also pretty similar to recent releases as well. Trailers, stills and a few DVD Rom features are all included. Thin on plot, heavy on cherry-bustin' nastiness, what's your tolerance for all things erotic? In my humble opinion, you can browse our Anime archives and find some much better options courtesy of the fine folks at Central Park Media, although I'm sure this type of raw material does indeed have its own target audience. If you're feelin' up for it, the doctor is definitely, IN!
