Central Park Media returns yet again with Part 5 (and the final chapter) in their continuing anime saga of sex and violence that is known as Nightmare Campus. Many of your old favorites return for a final round of demon action as well as participation in some truly graphic scenes of debauchery that are definitely NOT for the kiddies. Once again, Disney this ain't folks, so if you're not easily offended and looking to be shocked, disgusted and thoroughly entertained - then come on in!
Spoiler Warning!!!! It's going to get to a point in which it'll be nearly impossible for me to discuss the storyline of each episode as they are released without giving away important plot points. That's right, I'm giving away a lot of shit in the next paragraph or so about the story (more so than usual), so if you wanna go in fresh (as the kids say these days) then you'd best skip over the next paragraph and run home crying to yo mama! Also, be sure to read my reviews for Volumes 1 through 4 of the Nightmare Campus series in the Anime Review Archives.
At its heart Volume 5 feels more like a "where are they now" episode more so than anything else. While the shit really hit the fan in Volume 4, Volume 5 almost feels like the start of a new chapter in the story. We begin as a young woman is walking home late at night. The locals, aware of the demon activity within the school, are looking for an excuse to be angry (and rape of course), and the girl being a student of Nigtmare Campus, seems like as good a reason as any for the cretans to get their freak on. The heart of the story here lies within the fact that the students of NC now monitor and attempt to prevent demon activity. Widespread panic ensues, and when the news media tries to disguise the demon activity as a mass illness, the students worry that the demon lords will win.
As a final wrap up to the story, the last installment of Nightmare Campus is less than successful. However, as a lead in to a full-on sequal, my interests have been peaked. As a whole, the series was extremely enjoyable, should there be a new series, I'll be the first one on board. I dug the mass panic vibe towards the end of the episode here, it had a very cool Night of the Living Dead / Dawn of the Dead feel to it. Under normal circumstances a wrap up that simply prepped for a new series would just make me mad, however in this instance, it just left me wanting more.
Volume 5 is as nasty as it wants to be. With only a few "attacks" it's still worth mentioning some of the grotesqueness here. The violent sexual activity found within would surely ruffle more than a few feathers - and it's also nice to note that the Vagina Cam, is back in action! Man, am I going to hell or what!
Quality wise, Nightmare Campus looks quite good on DVD. There's really no evidence of print damage and colors are generally sharp and vibrant. The stereo surround track available in Japanese or English with optional yellow English subs also fares quite well. Surround tracks don't offer much to the viewer, but that's OK because the front separation is handled quite well. Both audio tracks (English and Japanese) are comparable in depth of sound and clarity.
Extras remain similar from previous releases including a brief art and sketch gallery along with a host of trailers for other Central Park Media titles. Also featured is a segment called Anime Artform, which provides an insight into this type of animation geared towards beginners. Also included is a host of DVD ROM features including more galleries and production notes/credits. Also inlcuded on this disc (not available on the previous volumes) is a Nightmare Campus tour. It's very funny, lasts only a few minutes and plays off as a mock video screaming the virtues of Nightmare Campus and why potential students should want to attend...tuna taco anyone? Did I mention that I'm going to hell?
Overall, I'd have to say that the Nightmare Campus series pleased me to no end. Whether you pick up each volume individually or go for the forthcoming set, fans of Hentai anime would be wise to add Nightmare Campus to their collections.
