For those of you new to the wild world of DNA2 (as in squared), this is the second review, covering episodes 4-6. If you haven't read the review of the first set, go do so now! The rest of you may proceed and find out what troubles Junta, and his alter ego the Mega-Playboy, have been getting into now.
Episode 4
Karin is upset that her plan to unite Ami and Junta, thus negating the threat of the Mega-Playboy, has failed. If she can't change the present situation, she's not gonna get paid! Junta asks Ami's advice on what kind of present to buy a girl; she tells him an expensive necklace, thinking it's for her. Junta, followed by a stealth Karin, purchases a fine piece of jewelry. Tomako shows up and believes the necklace is for her. A startled Junta doesn't object, and in fact transforms into Mega-Playboy! Karin causes a ruckus, which cools Junta's ardor and converts him back into our loveable loser. Junta helps Tomako shop, waiting for the right moment to ask for the necklace back. However, Tomako grabs him and tries to seduce Junta in the dressing room! Interrupted by a salesgirl, the normal Junta spews. Tomako appears not to be upset, much to Karin's chagrin. When Tomako demands to see Junta's bedroom, Karin knows she's in deep trouble - the effect of being near Tomako is causing Junta to fully become the Mega-Playboy! How can she stop Junta's transformation? And will Junta get his necklace back?
Episode 5
Ami sits at home, confused by her feelings for Junta - does she really love him? Karin sits on the roof, upset at Junta's apparent love for Ami, even though that will fulfill her mission to stop the Mega-Playboy. Junta snores on… The next day, Karin and Junta argue, causing Junta to turn into Mega-Playboy. His transformation is seen by Ami's best friend Kotomi, who falls instantly in love with him. Karin screams at him o tell Ami he loves her, but Junta insists he wants her, not Ami. Kotomi confides to Ami she's in love. Thinking it may be with Junta, Ami spies on his class and is relieved when she figures out Junta is not Kotomi's new beau. Determined to unite Ami and Junta while his DNA is still unstable, Karin forces another confrontation hoping one will tell the other they're in love. Just as it appears Karin's wish will come true, Kotomi reveals her dark secret. What is it? And how will Karin ever get Ami and Junta together now?
Episode 6
Kotomi runs off to the mall, feeling Ami has betrayed her. Karin and Junta fight again; Karin insists he tell Ami he loves her, Junta tells her he won't just because she tells him to. Karin gets a tad violent and drops him off her hover-bike. Meeting Ami, Junta finds out Kotomi's farting problem is like his barfing problem. Junta is about to confess hi love for someone when a revamped Kotomi appears - she's not looking like a shy little schoolgirl anymore. When she asks Junta on a date, he becomes the Mega=Playboy, and off they go! Ami is further shocked when Karin confesses her whole story - if Ami, who is not affected by the Mega-Playboy, and Junta get together, the future (and Karin's pay) will be saved. Ami is unmoved by Karin's pleas, however. Meanwhile, Mega-Junta and Kotomi prepare to make out in the alleyway. His DNA still unstable, Junta reverts to 'normal' and almost barfs. Cooling things down Kotomi is impressed by Junta's compassion for her problem (she was about to fart). Junta tells Kotomi he will help her overcome her problem. Karin scolds him for being with Kotomi, but Junta merely says Karin's jealous and leaves. But a grateful Kotomi has something special planed for Junta. And if Karin can't stop it, the Mega-Playboy won't be stopped!
DNA2 moves like a roller coaster. The hectic pace keeps the action always on the move. Unfortunately, it's a short roller coaster, because we keep going over the same ground again and again and again. All Karin seems to do is reiterate how Ami and Junta together solve the Mega-Playboy problem. Adding Kotomi to the mix really complicates things nicely since she's Ami's friend, but Tomako isn't seen after Episode Four. Kotomi's problem is a clever way to balance Junta's woes, and gives the animators ample opportunity to draw curvaceous butts. There is a lot of gratuitous T&A in this series, remember (and that's not a bad thing.) The creators try to give each character enough depth so they're not 'cartoons', but the pad is SO padded it's incredible. There is far too much repetition of the plot points and who's zoomin' whom. Each episode has 10-15 minutes of new material and 10-15 minutes of reiteration. I don't know how many episodes are in the complete series, but these could really use some script editing. A short re-cap is not a problem, but enough's enough. I hope the next set move the series along, because right now DNA2 is spinning its wheels. Time to shift into overdrive, folks!
As with the first DVD, DNA2 includes several extras. The most important is the "Helix of Love', a clever bit which links all the main characters with who they love, hate, or are otherwise engaged - a nice way to catch up the scorecard if the show leaves you confused. There is also an art/sketch gallery, DVD-Rom ability and previews of other titles. The picture continues to be very good, and the animation is above average for a TV show. The sound is clear and clean (and Dolby Stereo)
DNA2 is a lot of fun, but needs to pick up the pace if it wants to succeed as a really memorable series. Hopefully, the next set of shows will get Junta and company back on track and into more wacky trouble!
