Every October, when the leaves start to brown and a cold chill fills the air, I get the itch to scare myself silly with a good horror game. That need was fulfilled in 2001 by the landmark horror game Silent Hill 2, which had me running scared with its terrifying atmosphere and photo-realistic graphics. With the followup not scheduled to hit the shelves until March of next year, this October I decided to revisit one of the most enduring game series in history, the vampire-hunting saga Castlevania. I've been playing Castlevania games since the very first title appeared on the Nintendo Entertainment System way back in 1987. And although I've never actually finished that game, I've played nearly every sequel through the years and consider it to be my all-time favorite game series.
While not in the same category as Silent Hill and its ultra-realistic ilk, Castlevania is a classic horror adventure that pits players against horror icons like Dracula, Frankenstein and the Grim Reaper. Its challenging side-scrolling action has changed little over the years, while its spooky locales and hordes of creepy monsters provide the perfect backdrop for some Halloween-related fun. Castlevania has appeared on mostly every major game console over the years in some form, and continues to win new fans even today with its classic monster-whipping gameplay. I can't think of a better way to spend a cold October evening than with Dracula and company, so join me as I revisit some of my favorite games in this fantastic series.
